Art, Sowing Happiness.
Edward Willis Redfield, American painter, (1869-1965). Known for his bold use of color in Impressionist landscapes. He used exterior lightism (en plein air), which came directly from nature rather than in the studio. He created a heavy Impasto (heavy oil paint, reflecting brush strokes and squeegee marks) in a "single pass" or training session, usually outdoors, often in harsh winter weather conditions, tying the backs of his large canvases to trees with string so they would not be blown away by the wind.
He is considered the leading American winter painter of the 20th century and has won more awards than any other American painter except John Singer Sargent. His work has been exhibited in several major museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
